TipIf you're seriously considering increasing your reading speed, we highly recommend the popular speed reading program, 7-Speed Reading*. Click 7-Speed Reading for more details.

If you want to increase your reading speed, then you can choose from several speed reading methods, tips, speeding reading courses, and speed reading software. The best results come from combining at least two of these approaches.

One of the best ways to increase your reading speed is by gradually modifying your approach to reading and modifying your speed reading techniques.

Follow these steps and optimize them with the help of good speed reading software, such as 7-Speed Reading:

  • Read in chunks of words. The average reader reads by focusing on one word at a time. This is beneficial at first, and helps you comprehend difficult material, but it will hinder your reading speed. Instead, force yourself to read two or three words at a time. Gradually increase the number of words and phrases you read at a time. Treat common “filler phrases”, such as “it is important to note”, “the fact that”, and “in relation to”, as one chunk rather than as individual words.
  • Read the text without vocalizing the words. Do not speak the words aloud and do not speak the words in your mind. It helps if, as above, you focus on two or three words at a time. Your mind has only to recognise a word; it does not have to actually read the word. You can also try humming to yourself while reading, to help you break the habit of sub-vocablization.
  • Focus your eyes toward the middle of sentences. Try to read words peripherally, from just a few glimpses. In about a month, you will find yourself skipping small words like “for” and “there” without disrupting your concentration.
  • Keep practicing.
